The Royal Dockyard, established in 1691 by William III, contains a memorial to polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott. Born in Devonport in 1868, Scott died in 1912 on an expedition to the South Pole with his ship Discovery, now on display in Dundee. Gun Wharf, built in 1718, is also architecturally interesting.
